Description
EPDM rubber is a type of synthetic rubber. It is extremely durable and flexible and therefore has a wide range of applications, including in vehicles (where it is used for window and door seals, as well as cooling system hoses), cold-rooms, non-slip coatings for decks and playgrounds and many others besides.
Features
The main characteristic of EPDM is its superior oxidation resistance, ozone resistance and erosion resistance. Since EPDM belongs to the polyolefin family, it has excellent vulcanization properties. Of all the rubber, the EPDM has the lowest specific gravity. It can absorb a lot of fillers and oil and has little effect characteristics. Therefore, cheap rubber compounds can be made. Ethylene propylene rubber can be a lot of oil and filled with carbon black, the product price is low, ethylene propylene rubber chemical stability, wear resistance, elasticity, oil resistance. EPDM is very versatile, can be used on tires, it can also manufacture shoes, sanitary products and other light-color products. Thermoplastic EDM rubber (EPDM / PP) is mixed with polypropylene as the main body. At the same time, propylene rubber reaches the expected degree of crosslinking products. Not only in the performance of still retain the inherent characteristics of ethylene propylene rubber, but also has a significant thermoplastic injection, extrusion, blow molding and rolling molding process properties.
Due to the lack of polarity and low unsaturation, it has good resistance to various polar chemicals, such as alcohol, acids, alkali, oxidants, refrigerants, detergents, animal and plant oils, ketones and lipids, but has poor stability in lipid and aromatic solvents (such as gasoline, benzene) and mineral oil. Under the long-term action of concentrated acid, the performance should also decrease. In ISO / TO 7620, nearly 400 corrosive gas and liquid chemicals are collected on various rubber properties, and levels 1-4 indicate the degree of action, the impact of corrosive chemicals on rubber properties:
Grade | Volume swelling rate /% | Hardness reduction value | Impact on performance |
1 | <10 | <10 | Minor or no |
2 | 10-20 | <20 | less |
3 | 30-60 | <30 | secondary |
4 | >60 | >30 | serious |

What is the difference between rubber and EPDM?
Both rubbers can withstand general weathering, Ozone and UV making them ideal for outdoor applications. Tear strength/resistance is how resistant a rubber is to tearing. EPDM has good tear strength and is seen as the more durable rubber compared to silicone
